AASB Graduate Intern program - Previous interns

Colin Tan (2004)

Colin Tan

Colin completed his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), majoring in Accounting and Information Systems at the University of New South Wales in 2003. Prior to taking up the Graduate Internship position in January 2004, his background included:

  • Trainee at KPMG (Malaysia, Johor Bahru) (2000); and
  • Tutor, Financial Accounting, The University of New South Wales (2003).

Colin’s Honours thesis examined whether managers of Australian firms engage in earnings management around seasoned equity offerings (SEOs). A secondary focus of this study was to examine whether the size of the offer and the choice of different SEO methods would have an impact on managers appetite to manipulate earnings around the offering period.

At the AASB, Colin worked on a range of projects. These included first-time adoption of international accounting standards, related-party disclosures and local government financial reporting. In April, Colin also participated in the National Local Government Financial Management Forum held in Tasmania.

Since leaving the AASB, Colin has taken up a position with Ernst & Young with their National Accounting and Auditing Service division in Sydney, where he is able to utilise the experience he gained from the Graduate Internship to undertake part technical and audit work. Colin is also continuing with his CA studies.
