AASB Graduate intern program

Joanna Spencer (2004)

Joanna Spencer

In 2003, Joanna completed her Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) majoring in Accounting and Marketing at the University of Tasmania. Joanna’s Honours thesis examined interlocking directors and company financial performance. In particular, Joanna examined whether the number of interlocking directors on a company board had a significant relationship with financial performance and whether any relationship was particular to industry classifications. She believes it to be the first study of its type in Australia.

Before commencing her Commerce degree Joanna held several positions which included:

  • Assistant Accountant at Newlands Coal Pty Ltd (1999-2001);
  • Assistant Accountant/Payroll Administrator – Selwyn Gold Mine (1995-1999); and
  • Financial Administrator/Media Manager/Assistant Accountant at several advertising agencies in both Queensland and Tasmania.

During her intern year, Joanna’s experience in the mining industry was put to good use as she was assigned to the Extractives Industries Project, which is an international project in conjunction with Canada, Norway and South Africa. Joanna also commenced studying for her CPA.

After her Graduate Intern year, Joanna accepted a permanent position with the AASB and continues to work on a variety of projects including Extractive Activities, Prospective Financial Information, Employee Benefits, Share-based Payment and Investment Property. Joanna is also nearing completion of her CPA studies.

Joanna is currently Manager, Standards Development and Technical Projects – IPSASB.
