Job Description and Summary:

At the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB), you’ll have the opportunity to effect meaningful change in the Australian economy through delivery of accounting standards that are globally coherent and locally relevant, enabling entities in Australia to deliver comparable, transparent, and decision-useful general purpose financial reports.

As Technical Director of Accounting Standards at the AASB, you will be responsible for leading a team of technical staff to develop accounting standards that are fit-for-purpose in Australia. Evidence-informed decision-making is at the heart of every AASB standard-setting project, enabled through extensive stakeholder outreach and timely, relevant research. You will be responsible for ensuring that the Australian perspective is shared internationally to influence the development of International Financial Reporting Standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), and that standards developed domestically are evidence-informed

Key Responsibilities:

As Technical Director of Accounting Standards at the AASB, you will be expected to:

• Build, motivate, coach and retain a team of high performing technical accounting specialists
• Drive a team culture of collaboration, inclusivity and innovation, where diverse perspectives are valued
• Build strong relationships, based on effective communication, with key Australian stakeholders, such as regulators, users, preparers, and auditors, to proactively seek feedback in a timely manner on projects on our workplan, and to understand emerging issues
• Lead the team to efficiently deliver evidence-informed accounting standard-setting projects for for-profit, public sector and not-for-profit entities that are globally coherent and locally relevant
• Appropriately represent Australian specific concerns and circumstances throughout the standard-setting lifecycle to the IASB, or other relevant international bodies, such as the IPSASB, to influence the development of standards so they are fit-for-purpose in Australia
• Build strong relationships with international stakeholders and collaborate as necessary in the exchange of information, research, and insights in order to further our vision of globally aligned accounting standards
• Lead the team to develop high-quality, timely board papers and support the facilitation of effective AASB board meetings
• Contribute to the leadership team, including development and execution of strategy and operating plans and budgets

About You:

The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of Australian Accounting Standards and the intricacies of their practical application. You will be able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment, balance competing projects and priorities, grow and manage others, as well as work effectively with Boards and Chairs. Additionally, you should be able to demonstrate the majority of the following:

• Strong understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards
• A coaching mindset to support the development and growth of the team
• Ability to identify issues, solutions and negotiate successful outcomes
• Ability to interpret and apply complex legislative frameworks and standards, and to communicate this effectively with all levels of staff and stakeholders
• Detailed knowledge of technical issues and concepts across a broad range of topics, with an understanding of cross-jurisdictional and international issues
• Detailed knowledge of the legislative basis for the AASB’s operations and related protocols
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including effective presentation skills
• Demonstrated ability to handle ambiguity and change effectively
• Demonstrated commitment to acting with integrity, taking accountability, and fostering a culture of teaming
• CPA, CA or equivalent
• The right to work in Australia
• Sufficient senior relevant experience to deliver this role
