Professor Michael Davern (The University of Melbourne)

Professor Michael Davern, PhD, FCPA, holds the Chair of Accounting and Business Information Systems at The University of Melbourne.  For over 30 years, in Australia and overseas, he has led industry-engaged research on financial reporting, data analytics, IT Value, risk, ethics, management and internal control involving collaborations with the likes of CPA Australia, the Australian Accounting Standards Board, EY, NAB, and Microsoft, among others. Michael’s research is informed by his substantial board-level experience with for-purpose and privately held entities, including board leadership in investment strategy and reporting.  His current research explores future directions in financial reporting, particularly regarding measurement uncertainty.

 

Panelists

Ian Jedlin (Kroll)

Ian is a Managing Director at Kroll having commenced in Sydney on 1 September 2021 and leads their Australian Valuations Advisory Services practice.

Previously he was a partner with KPMG in their Valuations practice for over 26 years. Prior to leaving he was a member of KPMG’s Global Valuations Leadership Committee and the Head of Valuations for KPMG in ASPAC. He was also a member of the KPMG Australian Board from 2012-2018.

Ian also is currently Vice Chair and has been a Member of the Standards Review Board of the International Valuations Standards Council since 2016. He currently Chairs their working group on the valuation of listed v unlisted assets.

He has extensive experience in both public fairness opinions and financial reporting.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, a Master of Commerce from the University of NSW, is a graduate of the Financial Securities Institute of Australasia and is a member and accredited business valuation specialist of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Ian is also a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

 

 

Nicolas Konidialis (IVSC)

Nicolas Konialidis is the Director (Asia) of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC). He is also the technical director of the IVSC’s Business Valuation Board. He has three decades of experience in capital markets, corporate finance, and valuations.

Nicolas was previously the Managing Director at a consultancy specialized in advising, valuing, and transacting in intangible assets.

Between 2010 and 2017, Nicolas was a corporate finance advisor and Investor Relations officer for corporate clients in several industries, including Renewable Energy.

From 1994 to 2010, Nicolas spent sixteen years in equity markets in Paris, London, New York, and San Francisco in an array of functions from trading to Institutional sales for firms such as SE Banken (Enskilda), Credit Agricole and Sanford C. Bernstein, a subsidiary of AllianceBernstein.

Nicolas is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Chartered Valuer and Appraiser (CVA). He is an Associate Member of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA-BV).

He has lived in Singapore since 2009.

 

Kulunu Vithanage (BDO)

Kulunu Vithanage is a corporate finance professional with experience in valuation services. Currently serving as the National Technical Coordinator for Corporate Finance & Deal Advisory at BDO in Australia, Kulunu specialises in valuations of companies, intangible assets, derivatives, independent expert reports, and purchase price allocations. Kulunu holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Finance from Griffith University and is a CFA charterholder.

 

Richard Stewart OAM (PwC)

Richard is a Partner in Corporate Value Advisory for PwC based in Sydney, Australia. During his career, Richard has worked in Sydney, Canberra, New York and London. Since 1996, Richard has specialised in financial advisory services providing expert advice in valuations, corporate advisory and mergers and acquisitions. He was admitted as a partner of the firm in July 2000.

Richard was Chair of the NSW Regional Council of the ICAA and was the founding and longstanding chair of the Business Valuation Special Interest Group of that Organisation. He also served on the ACT regional council.

Richard’s expertise in valuation and financial analysis has been recognised externally by his appointment as an Adjunct professor in this area in the Business School of the University of Technology, Sydney and also his previous membership of the Australian Valuation Standards Committee (previously Board). He currently serves a Chair of the Business Valuation Board of The IVSC and sits on the Standards Review Board.

Richard serves as Chair of the St Vincent de Paul Society of NSW. He is also Vice President and past President and Treasurer of Davidson Rural Fire Brigade.

 

Anne Waters (AUASB)

Anne is a deputy Technical Director for the AUASB and is responsible for research, development and delivery of Australian Auditing Standards as part of the AUASB’s strategy. Anne’s primary focus has been initiatives designed to enhance Audit Quality, and guidance applicable to audits and reviews of historical financial information. Anne is currently working on the development of sustainability assurance standards for adoption in Australia.  

 

Moderator

Dr Eric Lee (AASB)

Currently serving as the AASB Research Director, Eric is the head of research and leads the AASB Research Centre with the primary responsibility to develop, implement and oversee the AASB’s research strategies that are coherent with the evidence-based approach to setting standards. He is tasked with initiating and managing research/thought-leadership projects that will inform AASB and international standard-setters about current and future accounting and reporting issues. He also plays a significant role in developing and building relationships with Australian and international researchers, policymakers, and standard setters.
